I Heart #NYCTECH
2013-10-10
#NYCTech has gotten a lot of love over the last few years, but I'm going to quickly add a concurring opinion on how awesome this scene is.
A couple examples from this week:
- On Monday, I saw Alexis Ohanian (co-founder of Reddit) speak at Stern. He spoke to a full room and made an effort to have a one-on-one conversation with every audience member who wanted one afterwards. Alexis's suggestion for me: get experience working with other designers and developers by signing up for Hackathons. My sleep deficit is growing (first semester of business school is absolutely nuts), but I might have to put it into overdrive by staying up all night on a group project.
- On Tuesday, I went to New York Tech Meetup, which, as always, packed NYU's enormous Skirball Auditorium. The projects were amazingly varied and included everything from a visual diary platform (days.am) to enterprise software for retail businesses to book appointments with customers (skedge.me). At the reception afterwards I had interesting and friendly conversations with bootstrapping start-up founders, product managers at large financial services firms, and engineers from a major online media outlet.
These events re-enforced my perception that #NYCTech is on the move. For more proof, the Hacker News who's hiring thread from last week shows how tech is growing here—it has job postings from a lot of NY-based companies (Quovo, Percolate, Enigma, the Huffington Post, Blue Apron, Harry's, Code Academy, Amicus, Zipmark, Eponymous, and more!).
